La Corbeau et le Renard Plate, 1965
La Fontaine by Jack (Jacques Hubert Bonnefoy), 2 cards, 1947
D. The vagabond musician little girl gets turned away by the well-to-do girl inside the house.
H. A girl lives out GGE by breaking her bank and finding only one coin. There will not be any others. The hammer in her hand suggests the silly violence of the act.
La Fontaine Cards, 1960
These are simple, strong presentations of the fables. The picture side includes the large illustration, "Fables de la Fontaine," and a title beneath. The verso contains the title again and the text of the fable. Simple forms and dramatic action are the chief qualities here.
La Fontaine Statue Postcard, 1920
The verso has a one-word message. Unfortunately the time-stamp is not clear enough to establish an exact date. The statue is dated to 1824 and is situated at Chateau Thierry.
La Grenouille et le Boeuf, 1965
The frog here carries a parasol and wears both a vest and britches. The ox, sitting in human fashion, looks on amused with his arms crossed.
The two different manufacturers can be seen from the different lettering used on two different sets, one of them all in caps. For a "wrap-around" view of any of these from 360 degrees, click on the image. The exception is the last member, a wolf donated along with other sets later on.
La Niece d'Hitler, 1999
A French translation of "Hitler's Niece" (La Niece d'Hitler) a novel by Ron Hansen and published by Buchet/Chastel.
La pie qui chante Dust Jacket, 1950
The recto explains "Cleverer than Master Crow, the magpie who sings keeps his bonbons for wise children." The verso shows the candy factory of "la pie qui chante" and explains the phased pleasures of eating this candy. Is that tree on the recto growing the white candies?
La Poule aux Oeufs, 1900
Landouzy Frères Cards, 1935
These cards have large and lively blocks of color. Each card has a clear title at its base in white against a red background. In one of the four corners of the image is the card number. The verso has a title, a verse text, and "Imp. Landouzy Frères Lambersart." The "9" on UP is printed backwards. Not all printers get everything right!
L'ane et le Petit Chien Plate, 1910
Le Chat et le Renard, 1930
The scene here makes a fascinating contrast with Grandville's original. This scene is busier, filling in all the gaps. That scene left room for picturing in the background the differing escape methods and their results. That is, one can see the cat run up the tree while dogs catch the fox. There is a small nick in the black rim line at about 8 o'clock.
Le Chat la Belette et le Petit Lapin Dust Jacket
A blue dust jacket showing a scene from the fable of the Cat, the Weasel, and the Young Rabbit. The cover features an ad for Chocolat Turenne. On the back is the fable written in French and multiplication and division tables.
Le Chien qui lache sa Proie pour l'Ombre, 1924
Le Chien Qui Porte a Son Cou le Diner de Son Maitre Plate, 1930
As always with Grandville, some of the fun lies in the clothes with which these three dogs are done up. Now I start to ask myself how many plates there are in the set….
Le Coq Et Le Renard Feve , 1980
The two different manufacturers can be seen from the different lettering used on two different sets, one of them all in caps. For a "wrap-around" view of any of these from 360 degrees, click on the image. The exception is the last member, a wolf donated along with other sets later on.
Le Corbeau et le renard, 1980
Here the cheese, dropped by the crow, has landed on the fox's head and made a major bump. The fox is still dizzy from the experience. This kind of humor, which I have found frequently on French post cards, I find here for the first time on tableware.
Le Corbeau et le Renard, 1965
A dapper fox in bow tie holds out a paw to catch the cheese he expects to fall. The crow in snappy hat and vest is holding the cheese firmly in his wing as though it were an arm. A lovely scene!
Le Corbeau et le Renard, 1975
Le Corbeau et le Renard Card, 1950
A card featuring a scene from the fable of the Fox and the Crow on the front side. On the back of the card is the fable written out in French.
Le Corbeau et le Renard (duplicate), 1965
A dapper fox in bow tie holds out a paw to catch the cheese he expects to fall. The crow in snappy hat and vest is holding the cheese firmly in his wing as though it were an arm. A lovely scene!
