La Corbeau et le Renard Plate, 1965

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 11
Identifier: CFC2023.0046.1
Abstract The designs here are mirror opposites of those on the colored Keller and Guerin plates just above. They also lack the golden stripe inside the rim. I continue to find these designs delightful, not least the tortoise and hare on their bicycles! After some negotiating and finally purchasing these lovely plates, I discovered the other similar Keller and Guerin plates and thought "Oh, no! I just bought things we already have!" Not true, as I found out when I opened them and compared. I...

La Grenouille qui veut se faire aussi grosse que le Boeuf, 1924

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0063.2
Abstract What is so lovely about these advertisements is that each uses the well-known fable situation to work in a claim for the advertised product. So the "talkative turtle" could not sustain his flight holding on to the stick carried by the two ducks because he did not use Dentol to make his teeth strong. The tortoise was besting the hare because he took Goudron Guyot. The rat who retired from the world secure himself inside not a big wheel of cheese but a wheel of Dentol. The lamb that is...

La Poule aux Oeufs, 1900

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0056.1.1
Abstract In the first image, a little girl seems to be putting coins into a stocking while a little boy watches. This seems the "before" of the story itself, establishing that the couple is poor. The second scene shows the young man delighted to have found a golden egg. The young man believes in the third scene that this black hen contains a whole treasure. The fourth card introduces the sinister knife with wondrous eagerness! In the fifth scene, the hen lies dead and the two humans grieve. Now...

L'ane et le Petit Chien Plate, 1910

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 11
Identifier: CFC2022.0083.3
Abstract The blue illustrations inside a black floral-animal circular frame on these crème colored plates are adventuresome "translations" of the fables into human situations and events. Some of the human scenes depicted here are hard for me to decipher. Is the dog's plight in DW that he lives in a spare room in the attic? Is the promenading wife in FG looking down on others she could have married? Has the hookah-smoker taken over a whole room in his host's house? Will the child bothering the...

Le Chat et le Renard, 1930

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 1
Identifier: CFC2019.0253.1
Abstract

The scene here makes a fascinating contrast with Grandville's original. This scene is busier, filling in all the gaps. That scene left room for picturing in the background the differing escape methods and their results. That is, one can see the cat run up the tree while dogs catch the fox. There is a small nick in the black rim line at about 8 o'clock.

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 1
Identifier: CFC2019.0252.1
Abstract

As always with Grandville, some of the fun lies in the clothes with which these three dogs are done up. Now I start to ask myself how many plates there are in the set….

Le Corbeau et le renard, 1980

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 1
Identifier: CFC2019.0254.1.3
Abstract

Here the cheese, dropped by the crow, has landed on the fox's head and made a major bump. The fox is still dizzy from the experience. This kind of humor, which I have found frequently on French post cards, I find here for the first time on tableware.
